What makes Ancient Woodland special?

- Contains unique ecosystems that cannot be recreated
- Home to specialist species found nowhere else
- Includes both ancient semi-natural and replanted ancient woodland
- Only 2.4% of the UK is covered by ancient woodland
Planning Considerations
Development resulting in loss or deterioration of ancient woodland should be refused unless wholly exceptional reasons and suitable compensation apply. This is the highest level of protection for any habitat.
