Frequently Asked Questions about Listed Buildings

What are the different grades of Listed Buildings?

Listed Buildings are classified as Grade I (exceptional interest, 2.5% of listings), Grade II* (particularly important, 5.8%), and Grade II (nationally important, 91.7%). Scotland and Wales use similar but slightly different systems.

What does listing protect?

Listing protects the entire building, inside and out, including any structures within its curtilage. This can include boundary walls, outbuildings, and even interior fixtures and fittings installed before 1948.

Can you make changes to a Listed Building?

Any works that affect the character of a Listed Building require Listed Building Consent from the local authority, in addition to any planning permission needed. This includes internal alterations.

How many Listed Buildings are there?

There are approximately 380,000 Listed Buildings in England alone. The oldest listing dates from the late 1940s when the system was established by the Town and Country Planning Act 1947.
